Sir Roden was born in Manly NSW in 1916, joining the AIF on 1 May 1940 and was posted to the 2/5th Field Regiment of the 7th Divisional Artillery. His unit left Australia on 20 October 1940 for the Middle East. Sir Roden's first experience of combat came against the Vichy French in Syria in June 1941. At Merdjayoun, he proved himself to be a courageous soldier and was awarded the Victoria Cross. Sir Roden was medically discharged from the Australian Army in 1942 having already commenced employment with RSL NSW as State Secretary. His service to Australia continued with a long and distinguished career in the Australian Diplomatic Services, and to this day he remains the longest serving Governor of NSW.
